OPTIMISTS prefer rainbow or strawberry, users of social network websites choose cookies and cream and people who keep a close eye on their wallets opt for vanilla.

Our favourite ice-cream flavours reveal more about us than meets the eye, a survey of more than 1000 Australians has found.

Market researchers from Colmar Brunton asked respondents how often they ate the sweet treat, which flavours they preferred and how they viewed themselves.

The results show those who read the gossip and entertainment sections of newspapers list chocolate and strawberry as their favourite flavours and users of social networking website Facebook say cookies and cream is the top pick.

Vanilla is the favoured choice for many, including those who have recently cut their spending and people born before 1946.; those who prefer rum and raisin do not consider themselves dog lovers.

The study found 64 per cent of men ate ice-cream at least once a fortnight, compared to 53 per cent of women.

Twenty three per cent of respondents ranked vanilla as their top ice-cream choice and 22 per cent said they favour chocolate.

New South Wales residents treat themselves to ice cream the most, at five times a month, followed by South Australians and Queenslanders.
